The scholarship has a total annual value of nearly £100,000 and is directly supported by the Regional Fund from SSE Airtricity’s Slieve Kirk Wind Park near Derry, which is Northern Ireland’s largest wind farm.

One of the students receiving the scholarship, Conor Olphert from Co. Derry, said: “This scholarship gives me the opportunity to pursue my education to the highest level in the field of engineering.

“It will also open the door to great employment opportunities for me.”

Vicky Boden, SSE Airtricity, said: “We’re delighted to be awarding the SSE Airtricity Scholarship to 12 Ulster University students this year.

“The fund is designed to help students with the costs of third-level education and allow them to advance their academic aspirations.

“We had a really high level of interest again this year, which demonstrates the difference the scholarship can make to students in terms of the educational opportunities available to them.”

Eddie Friel, Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Ulster University, added: “The SSE Airtricity Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for our students. Not only does it provide valuable financial support but it also encourages the scholars by recognising their talent.

“The scholarship is highly regarded and will help the recipients to achieve their goals as they progress into their professional careers.”
