This year, we have all had to travel down unexpected, bumpy roads, unsure as to where we are going.

Travel is very much in the news these days and many people find themselves far away from home and loved ones, unable to travel to be together for Christmas. For everybody, this will be a strange time.

But, despite that, in these difficult times many people have been their usual generous and supportive selves, especially to those under pressure.

Someone said that holiness comes wrapped in the ordinary! As in Bethlehem, so, too, here, there are amazing little saints doing great work in our communities.

I take this opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to everybody who has worked to keep vital services going for the whole community.

If there is one thing is to be learned from our experience in the past year, it is how interdependent we are as a society – each of us are dependent on the other carrying out their duty.

Just because Christmas will be different does not mean that it cannot be memorable in its own way.

I hope the unusual Christmas celebrations can be a time of unexpected blessings – and that we can journey with hope into 2021 together. That would be the best present for everybody.

I wish everybody a very holy and peaceful Christmas.
