Highly strung supergrass and the brains of the bunch, Clare Devlin (played by Bridgeton star Nicola Coughlan) has been a reluctant participant at times and a heady enthusiast at others as the group of friends hurtle into all sorts of shenanigans on the show. A loyal, caring but oversharing pal to Erin and co and a fan of energy drinks, hairbands and ski pants. Confirmed as the 'wee lesbian' in a letter writing competition, Clare is a bookworm and nerd but still way cooler than James according to Michelle. Just don't tell her any secret plans or any secrets full stop.... (Photo Channel 4)

Auch the Wee English Fella (played Dylan Llewellyn) aka James. A mild mannered and naive young English lad thrown into the lion's den of Troubles era Derry and an all-Girls School, James is the recipient of frequent put downs, but manages to somehow navigate his way through the alien culture of this ancient Irish city of his mother's birth to become a firm, if not quite confirmed, member of the Derry Girls pack. Luckless in love or the friends stakes, he comes to realise he is in fact a bone fide Derry Girl after all by the end of Season 2 though he's never gonna be leader of this particular pack. Good natured and good living, he hates fried food apparently and he comes to the rescue of the gang on several occasions but there's little thanks for his efforts. Hero moments include: Turning up to escort Erin at the school dance after she was stood up and putting out the fire in Fionnuala's flat.

Sister George Michael (Siobhan McSweeney) is quite simply one of the finest characters ever to grace the screen. She is the don in a habit; a no-nonsense, clued in and switched on kinda don. Principal of Our Lady Immaculate College, she is frequently brought to eye-rolling exasperation by the antics of those lesser mortals around her, children and adults, and can reduce the best of them to a crumpling wreck with with a sharp word, a withering look, or failing that a judo kick. Born cool, with a healthy dose of scepticism for just about everyone and everything, Sister Michael for all her rules, banned play lists and clamp downs, secretly admires the more rebellious students, perhaps suggesting a colourful past prior to her posting in Derry. Mary Quinn (played by Tara Lynne O'Neill) is the glue that holds the Quinn family together and someone who takes on the responsibility for everyone, from separating and doing the full clothes washes to sorting the dinner and disciplining/ reality checking her various charges. Not afraid to speak her mind, Ma Mary is the epitome of the Derry Ma, someone who holds down a job, raises a family, runs the household on limited means and sorts out everyone else's problems. She sets the family straight at every turn and takes on a parental role of her younger sister Sarah as well as her own wains and their feckless friends. No wonder her nerves are frayed!
