Derry & Strabane: 43 positive COVID-19 cases over past fortnight but no deaths

There have been 43 new cases of people testing positive for coronavirus in Derry & Strabane over the past fortnight, but a separate report has confirmed that there have been no further COVID-related deaths locally.

Data published by the Department of Health showed that in the seven days to Sunday, 26 people in the city and district had tested positive, to add to the 17 who tested positive the previous week.

Over the fortnight, a total of 4,672 tests were carried out in Derry & Strabane, meaning the vast majority of those tested were found not to have the virus. Since the virus arrive din Ireland, 323 people have tested positive in the city and district - the second lowest tally of the 11 Council regions in the north.

In light of the lower numbers locally, last week’s new regional restrictions did not include Derry & Strabane.

Of those who tested positive here last week, six were children or young people aged between 0 and 19.

A further 17 were aged between 20 and 39, two more were aged between 40 and 59 and the final case involved a person aged 80 or over.

Meanwhile in a separate report published by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, it was confirmed that for the week to September 4,there were no further COVID-related deaths in the city & district.

Across the north there were four deaths involving COVID-19 in the week to September 4, bringing the total COVID-19 related deaths recorded to 877.

Of this NI total, 466 (53.1%) took place in hospital, 351 (40.0%) in care homes, eight (0.9%) in hospices and 52 (5.9%) at residential addresses or other locations. The 359 deaths which occurred in care homes and hospices involved 81 separate establishments.

The NISRA figures are based on information entered on death certificates, completed by medical professionals.
