The annual commemoration for Mr. McBrearty, who was shot dead by the SAS alongside his comrade Charles ‘Pop’ Maguire on May 28, 1981, will not take place, however.

George’s brother Danny, on behalf of the family, said: “Due to the ongoing health crisis the annual republican commemoration remembering Vol. George Mc Brearty and all Derry volunteers, who gave the ultimate sacrifice for Ireland’s freedom has had to be cancelled.

“George’s mother and various family members, will be holding a wreath laying ceremony at George’s mural on Rathkeele Way at 3,00 p.m. Sunday, May 31.”

Mr. McBrearty said the ceremony will also remember George’s brother Pat who died on the tenth anniversary of his death in 1991.

“Any floral tributes from various organisations or groups can be given to family members or laid at the mural and will be publicly acknowledged,” Mr. McBrearty concluded.
