Life-saving throw lines stolen and damaged

Life-saving throw lines along the canal towpath in Ballymagorry have been stolen and damaged by vandals potentially jeopardising rescue efforts.

Police are appealing for information and witnesses following a report that two throw lines were taken from along the canal towpath, in the area of Foyle Walk close to Ballymagorry.

Damage to a further two throw lines was also reported. It’s understood this occurred on September 9.

Sergeant Lowry said: "A throw line could be the difference between life and death for someone, who may be in difficulty in the water. This equipment has a very clear purpose, and that's to help save lives. It's not a toy, something to be played with.

“For a person to fall into the water and not have access to life-saving equipment doesn’t bear thinking about. We all have a part to play in keeping our waterways safe, and that means ensuring this equipment is there, ready to be used, the moment someone needs it.

"If you witness damage taking place, or become aware of anyone involved in this behaviour, please report it to police on 101 or online via www.psni.police.uk/makeareportAlways call 999 in an emergency.”

Enquiries are underway to establish who was involved, and the police said they are keen to hear from anyone who has information about the thefts and damage.

In particular, they’re keen to hear from a member of the public who may have witnessed this incident, and would appeal to them to get in touch by calling 101, quoting reference number 1428 of 09/09/26.
