Western Trust launches new Short Break fostering service for children with disabilities in Derry
The Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) said they were delighted to launch their new Children with Disabilities Short Break Fostering Service at an event in the Waterfoot Hotel, Derry on Wednesday.
The Short Break Fostering Service is part of a regional service which provides planned, regular short breaks for children and young people with disabilities and their families.
Speaking at the launch event Maeve Campbell, Social Work Manager, Short Breaks for Children with Disabilities at the Western Trust said: “This service offers children the opportunity to enjoy new experiences, build confidence, develop independence, and form positive relationships in a safe and supportive environment. At the same time, it gives parents and carers valuable time to rest, recharge, and focus on other family commitments.”
“We are seeking compassionate and committed people who can provide welcoming, nurturing short-break care and make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with disabilities and their families. Together, we can create opportunities, strengthen families, and help every child thrive.

“If you feel you would be interested in offering a child with a disability a short break into your home please contact the regional adoption and fostercare website adoptionandfostercare.hscni.net for more information or Tel: 0800 0720 137.”
The HSC website says that ‘short break’ enables parents/carers to recharge their batteries, spend time with other family members and do things which are not always possible when their child with a disability is at home. A regular break can be a lifeline to parents, sustaining them and helping them to continue to care for their child.
