Road markings to be redone amid concerns

The Department for Infrastructure has said that road markings at the bottom of Southway will be repainted as part of resurfacing works, following safety concerns.

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan last week vowed to write to Transport Minister Chris Hazzard raising the need for safety concerns along Lone Moor Road, including at the junction of Lone Moor Road and Southway.

A Departmental spokesperson has confirmed: “Transport NI can confirm that the junction markings at Lone Moor Road/ Southway will be redone as part of a resurfacing scheme planned for Southway.”

She added: “It is hoped that the works will commence in December with resurfacing being carried out and remarking of the Southway/ Lone Moor Road junction in January.”

Mr Durkan has said that the markings at the junction of Southway/Lone Moor Road were “virtually nonexistent” and were “particularly bad and, in my opinion, present a real danger to road users”.

Issuing wider concerns regarding the Lone Moor Road, Mr Durkan had said: “People will not need reminded of how dangerous this road is and the SDLP have been working to have this addressed for some time.

“In response to a recent enquiry about the need for traffic –calming measures to be implemented on Lone Moor Road, I received the response from Transport NI that this will be looked at subsequent to the redevelopment of Brandywell stadium.

“What message does this send out to people living in this area? That their safety is not important?”

The redevelopment of Brandywell Stadium is due to start soon, and includes a number of new facilities.
