Smell of smoke inside Derry BT Tower sparks emergency operation

Fire-fighters have confirmed that they have deployed several appliances and crews to investigate reports of a smell of smoke inside the BT Tower in Derry’s city centre.

The ongoing operation follows an evacuation of the building adjacent to Queen’s Quay and cordons have been erected at Victoria Market car park and Custom House Street this evening (Wednesday).

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service confirmed to the Journal that its operation, as of 6pm Wednesday, remained ongoing.

The spokesperson said that after receiving an alert, NI Fire & Rescue Service mobilised their normal protocols and fourr appliances were dispatched to the scene with an aerial appliance and support vehicles.

The spokesperson confirmed that at present the fire crews were investigating the report of the smell of smoke at the scene.

A number of people were witnessed earlier outside the building, following what is believed to have been an evacuation protocol.
