So, what time do the clocks go back again?

The Autumnal equinox is a month past now and we've all noticed the shortening of the days, however, this weekend when all the clocks in Ireland go back an hour to 2am on Sunday, winter, unfortunately, will well and truly be upon us.

The lie-on is always welcome, but the darker mornings, and cooler conditions, between now and through the winter solstice, mean it’s time to take some practical steps in the interests of health and safety.

It may be mid-term break as we celebrate the end of harvest and Hallowe’en but when the pupils return to school it’ll be sensible to ensure they are wearing reflective and high visibility school clothing, where possible.

Research shows this has a major impact on the safety of pupils travelling to and from schools on gloomy mornings and afternoons.

Both the PSNI and An Garda Síochána suggest now is also time to check whether or not your car is winter road ready, if you haven’t already done so. Do your tyres meet the legal requirements? Tyres that do not have the legal tread will seriously affect your car’s traction and steering? High visibility vests, tow ropes, and shovels, would be welcome additions to any car trunk just about now.

It’s also a good time to get those flu vaccines and oil deliveries if you haven’t already.

Enjoy the lie-on and have a very Happy Hallowe’en.
