Coronavirus: Fewer than five confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Donegal

Fewer than five cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the south by midnight on Wednesday were in Donegal, the National Public Health Emergency Team have confirmed.

An analysis of cases up until midnight on Tuesday, March 17, provides greater detail on who is getting infected and where.

Yesterday the number of cases in Ireland rose to 634 - 557 cases in the south and 77 in the north.

However, the geographical breakdown provided by the Department of Health in Dublin used only the 350 cases that had been confirmed in the south by midnight on Tuesday.

It shows that Donegal was one of 14 counties were there had been fewer than five cases.

Dublin had the highest number of cases at 172, followed by Cork (62) and Limerick (14).

There were also more than five cases in Kildare (6), Louth (6), Meath (6), Kerry (6), Waterford (7), Westmeath (7), Wicklow (13) and Galway (13).

The National Public Health Emergency Team confirmed that there were 26 clusters of cases around the country - the 26 southern counties, that is, - and that up until midnight on Tuesday 43% cases were travel related, 35% were associated with community transmission and 21% were as a result of local transmission.

Of the 557 cases notified; 55% are male and 43% female.

The median age of confirmed cases was 43 years; 31 per cent of cases had been hospitalised; two per cent (7 cases) had been admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU); two people had tragically died; and 84 cases were associated with healthcare workers, 28 of whom were associated with foreign travel.

There is no geographical breakdown of the 68 cases of COVID-19 that had been confirmed in the North by Thursday.

With the confirmation of the first death in the North and a further death in the south on Thursday, four people have now died from COVID-19 in Ireland.
