Watch: Lightning storms hit Northern Ireland

The recent fine weather could be about to come to an end, as the Met Office has predicted that more heavy rain could hit Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Heavy and thundery showers could turn to torrential rain in some places, with parts of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland potentially seeing hail on Tuesday afternoon.

A Met Office yellow warning for Northern Ireland for heavy rain and thunder storms is in place until 9pm on Tuesday.

The Office said: “Thunderstorms are most likely to break out over high ground this afternoon, but there is potential for these to drift into low lying, urban areas. The torrential downpours will be slow moving and there could be more than 20 mm in an hour locally, with more than 40 mm in a few hours possible.

“Additionally, the thunderstorms will be accompanied by hail and frequent lightning strikes.”

It’s the second consecutive day a yellow warning has been in place.

Overnight, thunder and lightning was commonplace across much of Northern Ireland.

The storms follow a spell of hot and humid weather.

The weather prediction for today is a fair amount of cloud for most parts at first with scattered showers, but brightening up with some sunshine at times, although the showers becoming locally heavy and thundery during the afternoon.

And tonight it gives it to be a bright evening with some sunshine as the showers die out, then dry overnight but turning increasingly cloudy, with hill fog and some mist around the coasts.
