Youths set fire to bushes in Cemetery

Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly has expressed disgust after youths set fire to bushes in the City Cemetery over the weekend.

Speaking about the incident, Colr. Kelly said the culprits were believed to be as young as 12.

He said: “I was contacted late on Saturday afternoon by a man who was going up to visit his father graves just before the City Cemetery closed.

“As he was driving from the Lonemoor Road gate up to the top of the cemetery he seen a couple of young boys about 12 or 13 years of age wearing hoodies setting fire to trees.

“He stopped his car and challenged them, they ran off up through the older section of the cemetery.

“He used a couple of bottles of water he had in his car to put the fire out before it spread and he said it was lucky he was passing because if the cemetery had been locked it would have spread.”

Colr. Kelly added: “Once again we are appealing to people of any age to respect the confines of the City Cemetery, there seems to incidents happening on an all too regular basis in there now and it needs to stop.”
