Ulster University provides a hat trick of support for O’Neill’s Foyle Cup’s parade, pitches and accommodation

The O’Neills Foyle Cup is the highlight of the year for a lot of young people in Derry and beyond. Grassroots sport is vital for the health and wellbeing of our young people and the football tournament is a great opportunity to showcase all their hard work and dedication to the sport, whilst enjoying the comradery it brings.
The tournament provides them with a platform to perform and compete against players they wouldn’t usually be able to, which encourages them to challenge themselves in a more diverse competitive environment.
With teams travelling across the globe, including North America and mainland UK & Europe, it also gives them the experience in playing against different cultures and football styles which is instrumental in developing their skills and self-esteem.
Ulster University is pivotal in the development of the Foyle Cup offering support by hosting the annual parade, use of their pitches and hosting teams in their accommodation.
O’Neills Foyle Cup Secretary Phillip Devlin said: “It is a real privilege for our association to organise this cross-community, international, youth soccer tournament and it is a pleasure to work with and be supported by Ulster University.”
Phillip DevlinWe thank them for their support, for without this, we would not be able to cater for the 13,000-plus young people competing in our tournament, with almost 1,000 of them experiencing campus life for the six days of the event. Many of them we hope will return to undertake university courses in our city and district.
This year, the university was also the proud sponsor of the U17 and U19 categories, underpinning the range of activities and support it offers to local grassroots clubs in the region.
The university has collaborated with a range of local and community and grassroot sports clubs through support initiatives, including use of sports facilities, summer camps and cross-community tournaments.
