Not only did the 31-year-old’s effectiveness in forward areas earn him acclaim from supporters, but his 100% effort and commitment drew praise, something epitomised by the role he played in the dramatic Boxing Day win against Sheffield Wednesday when in visible discomfort.

On being informed of the news, McClean declared: “I just want to say firstly how proud I am to pick up the club’s Player of the Year award. I would like to thank the fans for their support throughout the whole season and their votes. I will work extremely hard to try to emulate and better myself next season."

McClean pipped Sam Clucas to top spot with last summer's signing Nick Powell claiming third spot.
