The news will be a huge boost for Rory Gallagher's plans with Glass being one of a number of high profile young Derry players who was plying their trade Down Under.

Speaking on social media, Glass thanked everyone at Hawthorn for aiding in his development.

"After having many discussions and thoughts over the past few weeks, I feel it's time for me to put an end to my AFL career and pursue my love of playing Gaelic for @wattygrahamasgac and @officialderrygaa," explained Glass.

"Thank you @hawthornfc for the opportunity over the past 5 years. You have developed me as an athlete but, more importantly, as a person.

"Also, massive thank you to everyone who has helped me over the years, from coaches, staff, players, the Hawthorn fans, the King Family and all the friends I have made."

The Derry man was the first Irish player to represent the Victoria based club after joining in 2015 and Chief of Football, Graham Wright, said the Derry man would be missed by everyone at the club.

"Conor has spent four and a half years at Hawthorn and has been totally committed to his AFL career the whole way through, " said Wright.

"While he will be missed around the club, the pull home has always been there for Conor and we fully support his decision.

"We thank both Conor and his family for his service to our club, they will always be part of our Hawthorn family. We wish Conor all the best in his future endeavours."

Glass, who captained the Derry minor team to the 2015 Ulster title under Damian McErlain before reaching an All Ireland semi-final, will provide Rory Gallagher with a major boost as he prepares for a November 1st meeting with Armagh in Celtic Park but it remains to be seen whether Gallagher will draft the Glen man in immediately after his five year stint in Australia, with his re-integration more likely for the 2021 season.

Glass was named as part of his club's extended panel for last season's county final against Magherafelt and has gone on record a number of time stating it is an ambition of his to lift a county title with Glen for whom he won numerous underage medals.
