Derry gets behind World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is on December 1 every year and it gives people all over the world the chance to unite against H.I.V. and remember all those who have died as a result.

World AIDS Day was held for the first time in 1988.

There are almost 8,000 people currently living in Ireland with H.I.V. and it is estimated that there are 34 million people around the globe who are thought to have the virus.

A red ribbon is worn by people who support World AIDS Day all over the world and local Sinn Fein Councillor, Colly Kelly, is one of them.

Derry people have been showing their support for World AIDS Day by posting messages on social media.

One Derry man said: “I’m heading into town this afternoon and I will be wearing my red ribbon with pride.”

“World AIDS Day, is a day in which the world comes out in solidarity and support for those who are living with HIV and AIDS,” said Colr. Kelly.

“The red ribbon is the international symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness and is used to promote awareness and support of a worthy cause and to remind others of the need for their continued support and commitment.

“We must constantly be proactive in supporting prevention awareness programmes for HIV in Derry and across Ireland, these programmes must be sustained and given the proper funding to help reduce the levels of new infections and put in place the support services that are needed for caring for those suffering with HIV,” added Colr. Kelly.
