Gary Anderson: Derry man convicted of murder 'unlawfully at large'

Police are appealing for information to help locate Derry man Gary Anderson, who was convicted of murder three years ago and is currently unlawfully at large.

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said that Anderson, who is 29-year-old and was sentenced in 2023 to 15 years for murder, had been on day release from prison on Monday.

"As of this time, Gary - who is approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, of slim build and with brown hair - has still not returned to prison or been apprehended,” a PSNI spokesperson said on Monday evening.

The spokesperson added: "We appeal directly to Gary to hand himself in.

“We would also ask anyone who has seen him, or who knows of his whereabouts, not to approach him directly but to contact police on 101, quoting reference 555 of 14/09/26.”

Alternatively, police said, information can be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100 per cent anonymous.

Gary Anderson and his brother Sean Anderson were convicted of the murder of Derry man Karol Kelly back in 2023.

Mr Kelly died after being stabbed several times after an incident in Grafton Street in the city.

At the time of sentencing the brothers were told they would serve a minimum of 15 years and 17 years respectively for the murder of Mr Kelly on March 4, 2018.

Both men had been found guilty after a trial lasting 22 days and were automatically sentenced to life in prison.
