Fears 'someone will be seriously injured or worse' on notorious Clar Corner in Moville

A notorious section of road at Clar Corner in Moville needs to be realigned ‘before someone is seriously injured, or worse,’ according to a county councillor.

Councillor Martin Farren was speaking at the Inishowen Municipal District meeting, at which he said another accident that occurred at the location over last weekend highlighted the ever-growing need for a solution.

"This whole scenario needs to be addressed. This has been ongoing since the 90s.

"I thank the council for putting down driver feedback signs and anti-skid materials but there is only one solution and it needs to be realigned.”

Colr Farren said the road is ‘third on the list’ of road priorities in Inishowen for the council, behind two in Buncrana. He added how he ‘wasn’t happy at the time,’ when this was confirmed and voted upon at a council workshop on roads.

He said while he is aware of the importance of these roads in South Inishowen, the corner at Clar ‘needs to be addressed’ sooner rather than later.

“But, we need to start looking at this as it’s a very serious situation here.”

He added that a solution needs to be found now and not when ‘someone is seriously injured or worse’, following which ‘something will be done about it’

The Labour councillor said he has always had his fellow councillors’ support when calling for works at the location but that an avenue for funding needs to be found.

“It is the main thoroughfare going into the town. It is extremely busy all year around, but going into the summer months it is crazy. I be fearful. I drive it myself every day and I worry about it.”

Colr Farren said counters placed by the council at the location in recent weeks revealed driver speeds of around 70 to 90kph but told how previous counters have recorded speeds of up to 140kph.

He said he will help the roads department ‘in any way’ to source funding for reaiignment.

"But, I know one thing. We can’t carry on the way we’re going with accidents at that corner. It needs to be addressed.”
