Derry girl brings home three European medals on her international debut

The North West Karate Federation is celebrating the outstanding achievements of one of its young rising stars, 11-year-old Róise Ní Ghráda, who has returned home with an incredible three European medals following her first international outing representing Northern Ireland at an elite championship.

Róise travelled to Rome, Italy, to compete at the 53rd European Wado-Kai Championships, held from October 30 to November 1, where she competed against some of the best young karate athletes from across Europe.

Making her debut on the international stage was a huge achievement in itself, but Róise showed tremendous determination, ability and composure throughout the competition, securing three fantastic podium finishes: 2nd Place – Children's Cup Kata; 3rd Place – European Championships Under 14 Kata; 3rd Place – European Championships Under 14 Kumite (Fighting).

For an 11-year-old competing internationally for the first time, these results are an exceptional achievement and a moment of great pride for everyone involved, a spokesperson said.

Róise trains with North West Karate Federation, based at St Paul's Primary School, Galliagh, Derry, where she continues to develop her skills, discipline and confidence under the guidance of her coaches.

Speaking on her achievements, the coaching team said: "As coaches, we couldn't be prouder of Róise. To step onto the European stage for the first time, represent Northern Ireland and come home with three European medals is something very special.

"She has shown great dedication, commitment and determination, and these results are a reflection of the hard work she puts into her training. At just 11 years of age, this is only the beginning of what we believe will be a very exciting journey. Watch this space – there is plenty more to come from this up-and-coming wee Derry girl!"

The club has also extended its sincere thanks to sponsors and everyone who contributed towards making this opportunity possible.

“Karate is a self-funded sport, and travelling to international competitions comes with considerable costs, including travel, accommodation, training and competition expenses. Without the generosity of local businesses, sponsors, family, friends and everyone who contributed through fundraising and donations, this opportunity would not have been possible. Your support has helped make a young athlete's dream a reality, and we are truly grateful.

"You have all played a part in this achievement, and these medals belong to everyone who has supported Róise along the way.

"Three medals. One proud wee Derry girl. One very bright future ahead. Congratulations, Róise Ní Ghráda! Watch this space!”
