Museum of Free Derry extends free Monday admission for residents

The Museum of Free Derry said it is extending its free Monday admission for local residents and half-price admission for students following the positive response to the initiative introduced earlier this summer.

The offer, which began on June 1, was originally planned to run until the end of August. It will now continue through the remainder of the year, with the final Monday being December 21 2026.

Local residents can visit the Museum for free every Monday, while students can access the Museum at half the standard admission price.

The initiative is designed to make the Museum more accessible to people living and studying in Derry. It also provides an opportunity for local people to spend more time exploring the history of the city and the experiences of those who lived through it.

Maeve McLaughlin, Director of the Bloody Sunday Trust, said: “The Museum of Free Derry belongs to this community. We want local people to feel that it is a place they can come back to, not somewhere they only visit once.

“Extending this offer gives more local residents and students the opportunity to spend time in the Museum. They can explore the exhibitions, learn more about Derry’s recent history and hear the experiences of the people who lived through it.”

The free Monday admission is available to local residents on a walk-in basis. Students receive half-price admission. The offer does not apply to online bookings.

Located in the heart of the Bogside, the Museum of Free Derry tells the story of the civil rights movement, Free Derry and Bloody Sunday. Through personal accounts, artefacts and immersive exhibitions, it explores the community’s struggle for justice and equality and the continuing relevance of that history today.
