Tribute paid to passionate trade unionist and socialist Mark Doherty
Derry Trades union council has paid tribute to the memory of Mark Doherty who recently passed away.
Mark was late of 77 Drumleck Drive, Shantallow.
He was a loving partner of Rachel, devoted father of Eimhear and much loved step-father of Teri, Audrina and Sofia. Mark was a hugely respected and dedicated shop steward in Seagate and championed the rights of workers both there and further afield.
A dedicated union champion and a beautiful soul it is with profound respect, admiration, and a deep sense of loss that we look back on the extraordinary life of Mark Doherty.

Mark was a man whose unwavering dedication, tireless work ethic, and fierce commitment to his fellow workers left an indelible mark on the shop floor at Seagate and throughout the entire Derry community.
As a proud and deeply dedicated Unite the Union representative, Mark didn’t just represent the workforce—he was their shield, their advocate, and their brother in solidarity. He believed down to his core that every worker deserved dignity, respect, and a fair shake.
He poured his heart and energy into fighting forcefully for people's rights in the workplace, never wavering in the face of pressure.
Alongside his vital union work, Mark was a true and passionate socialist. His politics were a living, breathing blueprint for how he treated people every day, guided by immense compassion for the working class and a vision for a fairer world.
Yet, as fierce as Mark was when fighting for justice, he carried that same immense heart into his personal life. First and foremost, Mark was a devoted and loving family man—a cherished partner, a proud father, and a deeply loved stepfather, son, and brother.
His family was his anchor, the absolute joy of his life, and the centre of his world. Those who knew Mark outside the workplace knew a man of diverse passions and simple pleasures. He had a deep love for the outdoors and camping, and loved travelling around Ireland, exploring the beauty of the landscape.
On match days, his passion shifted as a massive, die-hard Derry City fan, riding every wave of the beautiful game with local pride. Mark also possessed a deeply creative and contemplative side; he loved music and poetry, appreciating the rhythm, soul, and stories that connected people.
Mark’s legacy is carried forward by the stronger voice workers have today, the wonderful memories he created with friends and fellow supporters, and the love he gave so freely to his family.
He will be remembered not only as a formidable union representative, but as a man of true principle, deep integrity, and a beautiful, gentle heart.
He is deeply missed and will be forever remembered by all his fellow reps, work colleagues, and everyone who had the privilege of standing alongside him.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
Damien Doherty, Chair of Derry Trades Union Council.
