ATHLETICS: Big Derry contingent at London Marathon

Well done to the big, local contingent at Sunday's London Marathon and to teenagers, Lily Toorish, Aela Stewart and Fintan Stewart who were on their respective NI regional teams in the supporting Mini-Marathon.

Elsewhere there was an emphatic 1, 2, 3 finish for the City of Derry Spartans male teams at Sunday’s Wallace Park relays in Lisburn, an encouraging start by the juvenile Spartans at Saturday’s ANI Youth Development League first round match in Antrim and a win for Omagh Harrier Stephen Duncan at the Ballynahinch 10K.

Kyle Doherty, Emmett McGinty, Michael Murphy and Connor McDowell outran all the opposition including two other City of Derry quartets to claim the honours in the Wallace Park relays. The formerly very prestigious four by two-mile event failed to attract many teams on Sunday but the local squads looked good with determined all round efforts to notch a clean sweep on the day as seven teams lined up.

The Antrim Forum track hosted the opening round in the YDL on Saturday and in the Under 13, 15 and 17 age group competitions the juvenile Spartans performed well across the board. The U13s did best with individual winners in Oisin Colhoun, Nathan Fitzpatrick, Callum Spain, Lily Surman and Amy Spain.

At U17 level Sean Melarkey, Carla Perez and Mary Cait Byrne produced wins but the Under 15 and Under 17 squads have work to do in advance of the next round at the Mary Peters track on May 28th next.

More Track and Field action this Thursday evening at the Mary Peter’s Track as the ‘firmus energy Super 6 Series’ moves on to its second round while the opening event in the Donegal Athletics Board Road Race Grand Prix kicks off in Letterkenny on Sunday with the prestigious North West 10K. A 2pm start and entries taken on the day.
