DERRY CITY: Danish winger Philip Lund gets seal of approval

PROMISING Derry City trialist, Philip Lund has received a glowing seal of approval from fellow Dane and former teammate, Niclas Vemmelund who believes his capture would be a '˜major coup' for the club.

Vemmelund played alongside ex-Denmark U21 international, Philip Lund for two years at Danish club, FC Fyn and he believes his compatriot could potentially prove to be an ‘invaluable addition’ to the Derry City squad.

Negotiations between the club and the player have reached an advanced stage and while City boss, Kenny Shiels will continue to assess the player following his week long trial, he hopes to reach an agreement in the next few days.

Lund (26) comes highly recommended by Vemmelund who alerted Shiels to his availability and the ‘Candy Stripes’ defender believes it would prove to be an exciting signing for the Brandywell club.

“I know him well,” explained Vemmelund. “I played with him for two years or so at FC Fyn in Denmark.

“I recommended him to Kenny after he told me we needed some wingers and I knew Philip was free.

“I told Kenny he was a good player and a player the team could benefit from,” he added.

“He’s fast and is really good at running with the ball. When I played with him he was the best player that season for our club. He scored a couple of goals too. He’s really athletic and he’s a good player we could use. He has speed and a good understanding of the game.

“He’s only 26 years-old and has played with former Premier League players so he’s got great experience.

“It would be a major coup for Derry should we get him. He’s a very good player and could be very valuable for us.”

Lund has played briefly in the Danish top flight with Vejle BK. His career has taken him to America in 2013 but made just one appearance in the MLS with Seattle Sounders before joining Olkahoma City Energy in the USL Pro League. He won the Faroe Islands Premier League title with B36 Torshavn before heading to the Far East where he trialled with Malaysian outfit DRB-Hicom FC before Christmas, before linking up with Tampines Rovers in Singapore a fortnight ago.

But they preferred to hand one of their three berths for foreign players to ex-Arsenal and Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant.
