FORMER Ireland international Darron Gibson has been released by Salford City after League Two sides agreed to end the season early due to coronavirus.

The 32 year-old ex-Man United midfielder departs Moor Lane having played only four times since signing for the club last February.

However, League Two clubs voted to end the season and determine the final table by points-per-game amid the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving the Premiership title winner and 10 others out of contract.

Salford are part-owned by some of Gibson's former Man United teammates, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs but the midfielder failed to impress sufficiently this season and he was deemed surplus to requirements.

Gibson made 60 appearances for United during his time at Old Trafford scoring 10 goals and won the Premier League title in 2010-11 and the League Cup in 2009 and 2010.

He has been capped 27 times for his country but now the ex-Everton, Sunderland and Wigan player finds himself without a club.
